Panthers Earn Midweek Sweep of Valparaiso

FRANKLIN, Wis.  – The Milwaukee baseball team got strong pitching and timely hitting to help earn a midweek sweep of Valparaiso at Franklin Field on Tuesday night. MKE took game one 3-2 and won the nightcap 8-3.

"It was great overall. The wins are great, but also being able to get some guys involved was important," head coach Scott Doffek said. "We did walk too many guys but we handled opportunities and got outs when we needed. Offensively, we did a great job of creating pressure on the bases. Great team at bats at the right time and I think that was the difference in both games."

In his first game back since March 20, Mitchell Buban wasted no time contributing at the plate, driving in a pair with a first-inning double.

Logan Schulfer put together a strong start for the second straight week as he earned the win in game one.

The freshman scattered four hits in four innings and struck out two while allowing just one earned run.

After Valpo (11-13) got one back in the third, Aaron Chapman matched it with a solo home run to left, his second of the season.

The Beacons cut the gap to 3-2 in the fourth, but Keagon Kaufmann tossed two hitless innings and Riley Frey earned his first career save with a scoreless seventh.

"Keagon was really outstanding," Doffek said. "That was the best we've seen him this year which as really encouraging. And I thought Logan did a good job for the most part tonight."

The bats were rolling in game two as MKE (11-10) jumped on Valparaiso for six hits and four runs after two innings. Buban doubled in Luke Seidel and Nathan Ebersole ripped an RBI triple in his first at bat.

That was all Milwaukee would need as the pitching staff combined to hold the Beacons at bay. The Panthers worked around seven walks to hold Valpo to just three runs.

James Severson, Mike Edwards, and Nate DeYoung each tossed a scoreless inning to close it out.

At the plate, Buban struck again with a two-RBI single in the fourth and the Panthers added one more in the fifth and seventh to complete the scoring.

Seidel finished the day with four hits and was a hoe runs shy of the cycle in game two. Buban and Chapman had three hits apiece for MKE, combining for six RBI.

The Panthers will next host Purdue Fort Wayne this weekend in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 8 at 3:00 pm. Live coverage links available on MKEPanthers.com.
