Wheaton, Ill. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team took first in every event and convincingly knocked off Wheaton College, 122-78, Friday evening in Wheaton, Ill.
Nine different Panthers took first individually along with both the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay teams as UWM swept all 11 events at the meet for their third win of the season.
"Today was a real confidence builder," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "Any time you get in the pool and swim fast, it builds up some confidence. But, what we were looking for today was to really round some things out. We're trying to figure out those second and third events that the kids might be able to swim at conference and that's what we got to play with today and we saw a lot of bright spots."
Along with the relays, Milwaukee got victories from seniors Sarah Wardecke and Heidi Niespodzany, junior Maggi Beck, sophomores Hilary Woldt, Sophia Schmidt, Brianna Huth and Diana Diel, and freshmen Sierra Townsend and Anna Yontz.
Beck started things off for the Panthers, taking first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:42.52 in just the first time she swam the event all season.
Townsend grabbed the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:56.58) with Schmidt (1:58.40) just behind in second. Schmidt then took first in the 100 freestyle in 54.25 seconds.
Woldt paced the field in the 400 IM at 4:44.87 while Yontz finished first in the 50 freestyle at 24.51.
Diel had a strong swim in the 100 backstroke, winning the event at 59.55, over six seconds in front of the second-place finisher.
The upperclassmen got in on the mix as well with Niespodzany taking first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.06, while Wardecke finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.37.
Huth wrapped up the sweep individually for Milwaukee, swimming a season-best 1:08.87 in the 100 breaststroke.
The Panthers are right back at it tomorrow, with two dual meets against UIC and Illinois at UIC.
