MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 20, 2006) - Sophomore Sarah Teegarden scored the game-winning goal for the second-straight game and sophomore Erin Kane tied a league record with her 24th career shutout as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team defeated Detroit, 1-0, Friday night at Engelmann Field.

The Panthers (14-2-1, 7-0 Horizon) tied a school record with their ninth-straight win and clinched home field advantage throughout the league tournament as the No. 1 seed.

"Home field advantage is something we've been working for all season," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "As the season goes on, you become more comfortable with the home environment and playing in front of the home crowd. We draw well and this makes it easier for people to come and see us, creating an exiting environment for soccer."

UWM will now host the league's eighth seed in the quarterfinals Saturday, Oct. 28, at Engelmann Field. Game time and opponent have yet to be determined.

Teegarden scored the game's lone goal in the 75th minute off a corner kick from sophomore Beth Steuer. Steuer sent a line drive corner at the far post and Teegarden was there to head it past Detroit keeper Katie Fortenberry for the score. She now has four goals on the year, all game-winners, including the golden goal in UWM's 1-0 overtime win over Butler last Sunday.

"Sarah had a phenomenal game tonight. She's someone with tremendous energy and a phenomenal work rate," Moynihan. "She is a relentless worker, who keeps coming at people and wearing them down. We actually dropped her to a defensive midfield position tonight to replace Amanda Winn (who was injured). She had one day to work on it and she picked it up well."

Meanwhile, Kane was called on to make two saves in the match, including a leaping save in the 68th minute. Jenny Whaley sent a free kick on goal from 40 yards out for the Titans, but Kane was able to get a fist on the ball and punch it over the cross bar.

The shutout was her 11th of the season and the 24th of her career in just 36 matches. That career total matches Detroit's Alisson Dube for tops in league history. Fortenberry, Dube's successor with the Titans, finished with three saves on the night.

Following Teegarden's goal, Milwaukee gained a huge swing of momentum and finished the second half with a 13-4 shot advantage in the frame. For the match, UWM outshot Detroit, 17-5, led by senior Molly Duffy with four shots and Teegarden and senior Stacey Faude with three shots apiece.

Just five minutes after putting the Panthers ahead, Teegarden won a hard-fought ball outside the Titan 18-yard box. She then turned and calmly rocketed a shot that ricocheted off the cross bar.

"We have done a great job of outshooting our opponents in league play, but we have still been playing close games," Moynihan said. "Heading into the tournament, we need to work on finishing those chances and putting away teams earlier."

UDM pushed for the equalizer late, drawing a corner kick with 20 seconds remaining, but Kane rose above the crowd and caught the Titan cross, preventing a dangerous opportunity.

"We knew it would be a good game. Detroit defends well and plays direct to get set pieces," Moynihan said. "We limited them to just one chance in the run of play and that was a nice shot by Mary Parker, who is always a threat. But, on set pieces, we worked on defending them in practice and did that well tonight."

Milwaukee ends its regular season Sunday, hosting in-state rival Wisconsin at Engelmann Field. Kick off is scheduled for noon, following Senior Day festivities for the Panthers' five graduating seniors.
