MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin broke up a scoreless game with a goal in the 65
th minute and made it stand up, handing the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team a 1-0 defeat Wednesday evening at McClimon Soccer Complex.
Â
The Panthers (5-9-2) outshot the Badgers (3-9-2) and had the more dangerous opportunities on the night, but could not break through for an equalizer over the final 25 minutes.
Â
Milwaukee nearly squared the match just minutes after the goal. Freshman
Petter Ingebrigtsen volleyed a 67
th-minute corner kick off the far post and the rebound was sent just wide by junior
Declan Rodriguez.
Â
The Badgers took advantage of one of just two shots on target all night. A long serve into the box found Carl Schneider and his header snuck in past sophomore
Liam Anderson at the 64:30 mark.
Â
It was Anderson who came up big minutes earlier, making an impressive save on a breakaway opportunity to keep it at 0-0 in the 57
th minute.
Â
The Panthers also had a solid chance to hit the scoreboard in the 60
th minute, but senior
Kyle Neumann's header – off a nice buildup from junior
Zach Stevenson and senior
Laurie Bell – went screaming just wide.
Â
There was not much in the category of clear-cut chances for either team in the first half, with the Panthers outshooting their opponents by a 4-3 count.
Â
In fact, the two teams combined for just two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, both by Milwaukee.
Â
The Panthers had the Badger goalie out in the 27
th minute, but were unable to put together anything quickly, settling instead for a shot by senior
Luke Goodnetter that was easily saved.
Â
Neumann had Milwaukee's first attempt in the 18
th minute, but was not able to get enough on a nice header flick by Rodriguez, resulting in an easy stop.
Â
Each team maintained stretches of possession, but the closest either came to a first-half goal was when the Badgers hit the post in the third minute.
Â
With the in-state non-league matchup in the books, the Panthers head to Valparaiso Saturday for a key battle for points in the Horizon League standings race. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
